16/12/2005

There was an incident in Javakhk on December 11. The problem is that all Armenian employees of the customs control point not far from the border and Jdanovakan village were fired from their jobs and these positions were given to Georgians from different parts of Georgia. These positions were the main source of income for a lot of Armenians living in that region, and according to them by this action the central authorities want to strengthen the control on Armenians, which created confusion among Armenians in that region. According to “Regnum” news agency on December 11 at 11:00 a lot of Armenians from Akhalkalak and Ninotsminda cities gathered near the control point to protest. They asked the local government head of Samtskhe-Javakhetii to come and see the situation in the place, but he refused to visit this place, which caused a conflict between Armenians and Georgian policemen. As a result of this conflict the Georgian policemen had to leave the control point. After the strikers had captured this control point they started to move to the Armenian control point. The situation in Javakhk is still out of control.
