Who decides?

During a survey conducted by Karabagh’s “Open Society” NGO, citizens of Karabagh disagreed with the opinions expressed by citizens of Yerevan regarding the Karabagh peace settlement. One of the residents of Hadrut, who has lost her 20 year old son and husband in the Karabagh war, said the following about the Karabagh peace settlement during an interview with a reporter for Karabagh-online.com: “When my son died, my husband said ‘Each citizen of Karabagh has gone out to fight for the women, children and elderly; we have no other choice for survival’. Now our authorities are talking about making compromises. We have compromised too much for Azerbaijan as it is. There are many women like me in Karabagh, and that is already a compromise. Who has allowed others to talk about the destiny of the people of Karabagh without consulting with us? Why don’t our authorities inform the people about the Karabagh peace settlement process? Why is nothing written in the press? It’s a good thing that there are NGOs through which we are informed about the events taking place. Nobody can lead negotiations without knowing our opinion. Our relatives didn’t die so that the officials can make a career for themselves.” Another one of the residents believes that a proposal made by any international NGO regarding the Karabagh peace settlement is absurd. “How do Europeans or Americans know what outlook the people have for the Karabagh peace settlement? In general, who has given the right to anyone to decide our people’s destiny? Who has decided not to ask the opinion of the people of Karabagh? The people involved in this issue must know that the people must participate in the negotiations or allow someone who they trust. If there are any other proposals, then that means that not everyone is in favor of establishing peace in Karabagh.”
