There are at least five years remaining for the Karabagh conflict settlement. It is during that time that the Middle East will experience great changes and no country will want to leave any conflicts unsolved as a result of that change. During those five years, Karabagh must be legally recognized in the world. Russian politician Gleb Paklovski expressed this opinion based on the contest organized by Moscow’s “Caucasian Democratic Institute” of the Development Fund.
“That will be a hard game to play. All sides, including Russia, will be forced to show their cards,” said the politician. In his words, the people have started to prioritize their right to form an autonomy based on the law recognized by the world, however that can be considered legal for conflicts out of the European Union and it does not refer to Basques and people living in Quebec. “The world prefers the right to form autonomies, for example, Eastern Teymour which is far from Europe. European society can not even make a decision regarding the Eastern Teymour,” said Pavlovski. He even claimed that Karabagh could barely come close to that, since the Southern Caucasus region is located on not only Europe’s border of political but also economic interests. He also stated that despite Russia’s strive, it will not be possible to maintain status-quo in the region for a long time because the U.S. plans on bringing the conflicts into the light and solve them. “Taking that into consideration, the Armenian side must try and find a quick solution to the conflict, otherwise other cosmopolitan forces can intervene in the conflict settlement, something which happened in Iraq,” said G. Pavlovski. He even foresees a progress in the conflict negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan after the elections when the Azeri authorities will have more mandates and the opposition will not play a major role.
