It’s over

Yesterday in the Liberty Square the rally of the Armenian National Congress took place, which can be considered critical. Up until yesterday speech of Levon Ter-Petrosyan ANC used to demand bi-elections and that it’s necessary to hold extraordinary elections even a day before the scheduled elections. This was a matter of principle for them. Yesterday, however, Levon Ter-Petrosyan finally confessed that the ANC is preparing for the upcoming elections. This was evident right from the first days of the launch of the dialog with the government. “The Armenian National Congress will undoubtedly do its utmost to hold snap elections in the country, but since the conduct of early elections does not depend on the ANC, we must be ready for any unexpected development. However, if we fail to get Serzh Sargsyan’s resignation, since nothing is excluded in politics, we must try to raise the issue of his impeachment through an alliance with other political forces. We are entering a dynamic phase of political struggle which provides new opportunities for our goals. The ANC only has to correctly calculate its steps and take advantage of the situation. Today, we took a step towards a final victory, and this time the people won’t let it slip away. If, contrary to all our efforts, we do not manage after all to achieve Serzh Sarkisian’s resignation … then the Congress must seek to gain the kind of weighty presence in the National Assembly that would put it in a position to immediately raise, single-handedly or in an alliance with other forces, the issue of his impeachment," stated Ter-Petrosyan. Thus, the ANC at least had the uprightness to confess that they are not more able to realize revolution and change of government. They have received the mandate from the people to do so in 2008. Let’s leave aside the oratory of the rally. We may fix that yesterday the ANC stated that it’s preparing for the regular elections of 2012. And their message of raising the issue of impeachment of Serzh Sargsyan can easily be considered the next message of the ANC after they receive seats in the parliament. This message can easily become the cornerstone of the campaign as the return of the savings of the Armenian citizens or increase of natality. It’s no difficult to guess the attitude of the incumbent government about the intention of the ANC to run in the scheduled elections. This will be a response to the cooperation with the government. “ANC has numerously stated and currently states that its goal is not merely the reaching of power and that after the just victory of any party or candidate he will be willing to personally congratulate him,” yesterday stated Ter-Petrosyan. By doing so he clarifies the ANC plans not only for the parliamentary but also for presidential elections. All we have to do is clarify how many parliamentary mandates the congratulation of Serzh Sargsyan is worth of. The activity of the recent period of ANC shows that in the near future this service will either be fully “devaluated” or at the best provide “weighty minority” in the 2012 parliament.
