“If there are fair elections in Russia, but not demonstrative coronation, Putin will definitely win because he enjoys the trust of people. However, Kocharyan, who does not have the trust of people, will be faced with strong resistance on part of people,” said Thomas De Waal, expert of Carnegie foundation, concerning the processes in Russia and possibility of Kocharyan’s return to politics. According to him, Serzh Sargsyan understands that and “his attempts may even result on the silent support of the opposition for the incumbent authorities because they would prefer to see Sargsyan on power rather than Kocharyan.”
