In an extraordinary manner

10/04/2011

Yesterday it became known that the European Court will hear in an extraordinary term the pleadings of the editor in chief of Hayakan Zhamanak daily, political prisoner Nicol Pashinyan. Yesterday the attorney of Pashinyan Vahe Grigoryan received information on that. This decision was made by the chair of the 3rd chamber of the European Court. Let us mention that Pashinyan submitted three court suits to the European Court, in which he complains about the persecution after the events of March 1, 2008 as well as because of the violence practiced against him in prison, prohibition of receiving letters or writing. It is not excluded that the ruling will be made very soon. This policy of the European Court can be considered clarification of the PACE attitude in relation to Armenia and supposedly the last visit of the co-rapporteurs of PACE also played its role in this process. It is not hard to predict that the verdicts of the European Court will once again humiliate Armenian government’s reputation. And it is not excluded that this fact will make the Armenian government make a decision to immediately release Nicol Pashinyan. Let us mention that yesterday a few media outlets in Armenia have addressed a letter to Minister of Justice Hrayr Tovmasyan asking him to arrange a meeting with jailed opposition activist Pashinyan in Artik penitentiary. "We – the chief editors of the media outlets – want to visit our colleague, chief editor of "Haykakan Zhamanak" daily Nikol Pashinyan who is serving his prison term in Artik Penitentiary. The law envisages visits to prisoners by media representatives, and we hope you will not deny our request," reads the letter.
