After the past three months the Armenian national Congress held the first rally in Yerevan. The rally was overcrowded and it reminded the ANC’s best times with active demonstrations. The big number of participants in the demonstration can be the main message as it shows that the social situation and discontent of people are growing to the extent of a real revolution. However during the rally no alternative projects other than social discontent or bad situation were offered. Even more, the first president Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s speech contained certain messages targeted at both the authorities and the society. “Even though the ANC has always been concerned of the possibility of a war on part of Azerbaijan in case of internal crisis, but the society that is flipping out already and has nothing to lose may one day throw away both the ANC and Karabakh and flip out,” said Ter-Petrosyan. In order to understand the meaning of these words we may refer to the words of the ANC representative Davit Shahnazaryan, who says that the ANC is the only guarantee of stability in Armenia. On the one hand be reaffirming this fact Ter-Petrosyan wants to either make the authorities understand something or hints on certain conditions as in fact the ANC has become the fourth power of the ruling coalition (one of the formal goals of the coalition is stability too). On the other hand Ter-Petrosyan directly said that even if there would be a revolution, it would not be done by him. By saying that people may flip out he actually means that if people stand up they will care neither about the opposition nor about the government. Former PM Hrant Bagratyan in fact approved that the announcement about “stability in favor of stability in Karabakh” is mere euphemism. “There is one way out of this situation; often people say we should not fight for a revolution as we have the problem of Karabakh. This revolution should be firstly in favor of Karabakh. The processes in Tunisia, Egypt and Jordan started unexpectedly, and now I want to follow their path. This is the only solution you have,” said Hrant Bagratyan. Usually whoever opposes to the ideas of the ANC they say these people are traitors. Hrant Bagratyan contradicted Levon Ter-Petrosyan. We don’t know whether Bagratyan has been declared a traitor or no yet, but it can be a good topic to speak about during the next rally scheduled on March 1.
