Symphony of sycophancy

01/12/2009

At the beginning of this month a well-known Armenian filmmaker, an Oscar nominee Vigen Chaldranyan presented his new film Maestro. Only the elite spectators of Armenia had the opportunity to see this film. However, judging from the commercial of the movie there can be no doubt that it will soon be showed on all the TV channels because the film combines the whole slime of the governmental propaganda with lyrical enhancements. The movie demonstrates the mass riots of downtown Yerevan erupted after the last year’s presidential race. Chaldranyan depicted a lofty a composer, who as you imagine is disturbed by the peaceful protesters. The hero is a person, who fights against injustice by his music. Moreover, this movie, which degrades the role of average citizens, was partly financed by the state budget formed by us, regular taxpayers. The Money was provided by the National Cinema Center. Here the issue is not the political views of the filmmaker but the fact that sometimes some intelligentsia representatives may reach unlimited boundaries in order to be pleased and liked by the authorities. Moreover, the authors of the Maestro were no more sycophant than all the other intelligentsia representatives, who would express opinions in front of video cameras regarding the film. Many of them, however, actually feel obnoxious about this film and talk about that everywhere. Fortunately there are still people, who don’t refuse to express opinions regarding this film. “Our republic is currently in a bad state and I consider it a low behavior to consider a personal well-being higher than the well-being of the society,” said writer, publicist Vahram Martirosyan when speaking to our reporter.
