Time to escape from responsibility

10/09/2009

Last week the Civilitas foundation headed by former foreign affairs minister Vardan Oskanyan published an article in its web site, which concerned the protocols signed between the Armenian and Turkish parties. In the article “Let’s call things as they are” there were very smooth definitions, but it was a civilized attempt of criticizing the current foreign policy. Recently Vardan Oskanyan published another article concerning this topic, which is published in our newspaper as well. In his article entitled “Mistakes are unforgivable” he expressed his concerns relating to the protocols, as well as the possibility of recognizing the genocide and excluding the possibility to demand lands and the possibility of the Karabakh conflict settlement not in favor of Armenia. Oskanyan’s critics can be considered justified if we forget who is speaking of that. In this case it is not about the content of his words but the reasons why he had to say that. In fact this publication can be accepted as Kocharyan’s reaction to the policy implemented by Serzh Sargsyan and his message, which shows that he is not against returning to politics based on the current policy. It is not by chance that the person who worked as prime minister for about ten days decided to “call the things with their names” and said that “mistake is unforgivable” only in one week following Kocharyan’s announcement that it is impossible to leave politics. It means that the scenario of returning Kocharyan to politics, which has been discussed in the recent times, is working now. As for the announcements and opinions of the former prime minister, we may say that the former prime minister and president used this opportunity to escape from the responsibility of the policy in relation to the issue of Karabakh implemented by them during ten years. If their policy concerning the Armenian-Turkish relations could be the same (they implemented a policy of the Armenian justice), their critics addressed at the policy in relation to the issue of Karabakh is not so fair. Unfortunately their opinion that Turkey may open the borders and develop relations with Armenia only after the settlement of Karabakh conflict not depending on anything is true too. However the godfathers of the Civilitas foundation have forgotten who were the ones who have driven the process of Karabakh conflict settlement to this point. The principles of Madrid that are on the table now were worked out in 2007. Thus, things should be called with their names.
