“When we are talking about returning seven regions and maintaining land connection with Armenia, we should understand that in the next phase we will be faced with the issue of Meghri,” said former defense minister Vagharshak Harutyunyan when commenting on the issue of Karabakh and Madrid principles of conflict settlement. “When we agree with the principles of Madrid and give those regions, Karabakh will become an enclave. If it happens, they will face us with a task and will say that if Karabakh should have a connection with Armenia, then Azerbaijan should have a connection with Nakhijevan as well. Turkey has a strategic goal to have a land connection with Azerbaijan and Asia through Meghri. For this purpose in 1920 Turkey gave 10 times more territories to Iran in order to have a border with Nakhijevan. In other words, if we continue this way, we may lose Meghri as well,” he said.
