Even though the issue of appointing Vyacheslav Kovalenko as Russia’s Ambassador in Armenia has been discussed at different levels, still there are questions which have not been answered yet. Since the Russian-Georgian conflict and resulted breakdown in diplomatic relations Kovalenko’s diplomatic career in Georgia finished. Even though he is known as a very professional diplomat in Russia, his mission in Georgia is considered to be failed. By the way, in Armenia there is an opinion according to which by sending the mentioned diplomat to our country the Russian government gave an answer to the Armenian president’s decision to grant a medal to Sahakashvili. Before being appointed Russia’s Ambassador in Georgia, Kovalenko worked in the Russian Embassy in Belarus. According to non-official sources, he controlled the work of security services in Belarus. The opinions, according to which if Russia has sent such a good KGB agent to Armenia they are getting prepared for serious events, is justified to some extent. Recently there were publications in the media reporting that the Russian Ambassador is having a series of meetings with a number of Armenian political powers.
