Any intellectual person would understand that the government of Armenia should not have suggested world famous Charles Aznavour to become Armenia’s Ambassador in Switzerland. Chalres Aznavour is 85, and Armenia should leave him quiet and not disturb with anything at least for the great honor that he has done to Armenia. However, some people think that he has certain responsibility to Armenia due to the facts that he is Armenian, and has a title of national hero and citizenship of Armenia. Thus, they want to grab as much as they can from him, at least Aznavour’s great fame and name could be a contribution.
Before initiating such suggestions to a person such as Aznavour people should first of all think whether such suggestion would help him or the vice versa. The problem is that the mentioned suggestion was not initiated by a group of intelligentsia representatives who seek Aznavour’s support to save the reputation of our country due to his own reputation, but president Serzh Sargsyan. Maybe Armenians think that Aznavour is pleased with this suggestion. However, Aznavour shows that despite the age talented people can be smarter and cleverer than certain people who have to be so due to the state positions they occupy. As it was expected, the president’s offer was followed by polite refusal. “Recently the president of Armenia suggested me to become the Ambassador of Armenia in Geneva. I felt very proud, I was happy that day. However I realized that if I accepted that suggestion, I would lose my independence. If any decision of the Armenian government does not satisfy me, I will feel upset. I can’t lose my freedom for any honored position,” said Aznavour in an interview to the El Pais. Diaspora Armenians have a very good character and despite us, the local Armenians, they don’t praise high ranked officials. The government could demonstrate a good respect to Aznavour by fair distribution of the aids he sent to Armenia during the earthquake in 1988. What happened? As you may remember, the newspapers of those times wrote that Aznavour was shocked by the fact that the officials were grabbing the aids sent to Armenia and the people of his nation were so hungry of foreign aids that could do anything to have it.
In other words, in respect to the great representatives of our nation we could do everything in a manner so that not to allow them feel confused in France, Armenia and anywhere in the world as it happened several years ago during the presentation of his book. Tough often he had to hide the disappointment behind black sunglasses and his smile.
Accordingly, we can be sure that such great people don’t feel pleased when they attend the openings of squares or schools in their names, and also they often get tired of the boring polite behavior of officials. Furthermore, we can be sure that he is not pleased with the government’s decision dated February 5, according to which the government is allocating 300 million dram from the government’s reserve funds of 2009 to build a museum after Charles Aznavour. By the way, this year even the ministry of Diaspora attempted to praise Aznavour.
If we refer to one of Bulgakov’s writings, we will understand that due to his hard work and great honor Aznavour deserves a right to have a REST. He should first of all be free of Armenians.
By the way, this invitation shows how much the incumbent authorities may praise the fame and ignore the citizens of their country. Certainly we are not so talented and famous as Aznavour, but on the other hand 50 years old teachers are retired and 55 years old men are suggested maximum with a position of a building guard. People are not respected to the extent of considering 35 a critical age.
Of course there is no need to say how dangerous may be such behavior of applying to someone all the time on part of a high rank official. Russian writer Gogol has written the detailed characteristics of such officials and the title of the book is The Chinovnik’s Death (the Official’s Death).
P.S. Even though Kirk Kirkoryan has not given interview to the El Pais, it is not excluded that he might have been suggested and refused to work as Armenia’s council in Las Vegas.
