Coming to evaluate

Tomorrow the EU assignee on human rights issues Thomas Hammarberg will pay a three- days visit to Armenia. The EU statement informs that the purpose of his visit is to evaluate the progress in the investigation works of the March 1 events. “In my last report on Armenia I petitioned to conduct a comprehensive investigation of the March 1 events. Thus the purpose of my visit is to see the improvement in this matter and also to get correct information about the number and status of detainees,” he said. “My visit to Armenia is a part of the talks with the Armenian government and is the continuation of my visits in October and March. I also know about the recent resolution of the PACE on the democratic institutions in Armenia and I want to provide international contribution to improve the situation connected with human rights protection in the country,” he said. In Yerevan Mr. Hammarberg will meet with president Serge Sargsyan, leaders from the parliament and government, the prosecutor general, ombudsman, members of the ad hoc commission in charge of investigating the events of March 1, international organizations and representatives of the civic society. He will also visit prisons. The spokesperson of the people’s movement Arman Musinyan has informed radio Liberty that they have received an offer to have a meeting with the leader of the movement Levon Ter- Petrosyan.
