Yesterday in Strasburg the statement of the general secretary of the Council of Europe Terry Davis was released regarding the verdict of the European Court on the A1+ Armenia TV channel. Specifically Davis named the verdict as a victory of freedom of speech. “The TV is a quite influential media source. The process of denying licenses may jeopardize the freedom of speech in the country and thus affect the development of democracy in the country. The verdict of the European Court of Human Rights puts a full stop on the saga of the Armenian government, which refuses to give license to the A1 plus. The verdict was made only after the numerous requests of the Council of Europe were ignored by the RA government. All the Council of Europe states have the legal obligation to obey the verdicts of the European Court and the European Convention. They should be doing this without being reminded of their obligations,” reads the statement.
