Road intersection

04/05/2008 Gevorg ALTUNYAN

Besides their tragic essence the recent events also demonstrated the inability of the whole state apparatus, the broad spread discontent within the society, inclination of political forces to radicalism and most importantly the mass perception that it is impossible to live like this any more. The problem is not even with Levon Ter-Petrosyan or Serzh Sargsyan. The problem is much more global, pan-national and nationally significant. I’d even call it a problem of our existence. During years we were able to create a state, public value system, which strengthened the values, dignity, creed and trust of our citizens. This includes everything that is important for going on. Levon Ter-Petrosyan put the whole guilt on the state apparatus, which he called a bandit-state. Let us not argue about the formulation. For some of the people the formulation is acceptable, for others it is not. However, it is more than obvious that the state apparatus definitely has certain problems. The process of rotting within it has reached its peak – the cynicism of statesmen, impertinence, impunity and broad-scale violation of the rights of average citizens, the formation of the institute of local “governors” and the horrible image about them, the wide-spread corruption from the above to the bottom in all sectors, the fun that the oligarchs are having in front of the poor people, falsification of elections, etc. We can also include all types of other pathologies, which couldn’t possibly confuse the value system of the people. This situation would take us to destruction. I am repeating the problem is not whether we live well or badly because in prison one can also have a full stomach. The problem is with the prison as a phenomenon. No we have a historical road interception in front of us, which will either lead us further or drag us back to prison. This is one of the situations when the stationary medical treatment of the patient is senseless and surgical treatment is needed urgently and immediately. The society or a major part of it was able to prove one important thing during the last events. It proved that it won’t be able to live in the same way. This means that the society is ready and wants to go ahead. In my opinion the movement initiated by Levon Ter-Petrosyan turned into the movement of the people, of every citizen separately taken. During the rallies they were always mentioning that the problem is within the people, who sell their votes t 5000 drams, who are not real members of the civil society. It turned out that it is not so. It turned out that the society realized that it is standing in front of the road intersection. In this regard the ball is in the filed of the government. So what should the government do? If it realizes the significance of the issue it should do pretty much what Ter-Petrosyan was promising people – ruin the formed pyramid from head to toes. Why should the government take that step? Finally the top of that echelon is basically the support of the government. In that case, why would they destroy what gives them what they need in the current Armenian marred understanding – money, power, protection, etc? The answer is more than simple. There are cases when incomparably; more important issues originate. Now we are facing these issues. I am repeating we are standing in front of the road intersection, which lead the country to two different directions – abyss and progress. The events of March 1 totally dismantled all the assumptions that even with all its drawbacks the country is moving forward. Those proved that if the government is segregated from the people then it cannot possibly enjoy the trust and sympathy of people. Thus the power of the government may lose its value within several days or overnight. The government realized that its power may disappear and even not cost a nickel and that the country may appear in the claws of the civil war. Therefore, all the achievements, which were registered objectively or subjectively, don’t cost anything if they are not ratified by the people through their trust and support to the government. It means that any government, which doesn’t have the support and trust of people may be permanently facing the hazard of the March 1 events, means that the country is going to be constantly located in the political cataclysms. Therefore, there cannot be any progress. I think this is the main lesson, which we and the government must learn from the events of March 1. That is the reason why the government must destroy the pyramid it established via their decisive, strict and concise steps. Otherwise the country will be sentenced to destruction. We should agree that the average citizen shouldn’t care who is destroying the pyramid – Ter-Petrosyan or Sargsyan. The important thing is to live in a country, where everything is in place. Will the government be able to choose the right road? Let us try to believe that yes. At any rate at present they have a historical momentum to do so because the society proved that it cannot live like that any more. The society virtually stretched its hand.
