One of the main issues to be discussed at the NATO summit in Bucharest concerns granting a membership action plan to Ukraine and Georgia to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The US president George Bush has petitioned the NATO to start the process of granting membership to these two countries. A number of the member countries are against such membership. France and Germany are against it too. The French prime minister Francua Fiyon has said that granting membership to Ukraine and Georgia will change the balance between Europe and Russia. The NATO summit will discuss the issue of granting membership to Croatia, Albania and Macedonia as well. President of Russia Vladimir Putin will participate in the summit as a guest on April 4, after which he will host the president of the United States in Sochi. It is clear that after Ukraine and Georgia join the NATO the situation will become more complicated in our region as after losing the other countries Russia will increase its participation in our country. Armenia does not have any real opportunities to prevent such possibilities. The Armenian president-elect Serzh Sargsyan will visit Bucharest for one day to take part in the discussion entitled as Euro-Atlantic Cooperation Security Challenges of the 21st Century to take place in participation with the heads of Euro-Atlantic Cooperation Council members.
