Clash with police

13/05/2007

Yesterday near the Matenadaran a mass rally was held by three opposition parties: the “Impeachment” alliance and “New Times” (NT) and “Republic” parties, with the participation of over 20,000 citizens. After the rally, the crowd moved to the building of the National Security Service to demand the freedom of former RA Foreign Affairs Minister and initiator of the Civil Disobedience Movement, Alexander Arzumanyan, who was recently arrested as a suspect of “money laundering”. The protest was followed by a large clash between the police and the crowd. The police used tear-gas. There were wounded both among oppositionists and the police. Nikol Pashinyan, Davit Matevosyan, Mher Manukyan, Petros Makeyan and other Impeachment activists received blows by the police. Some of the protestors were arrested, however the crowd didn’t disperse, leaving the scene only after everyone charged was released.
