Is Europe taking Armenia from Russia?

15/12/2006

Yesterday “Nezavisimaya Gazeta” newspaper published article, where the reporter expressed concerns about the fact that “Euro Union is buying the CIS countries from Russia”. “What can they do to collapse the CIS that can hardly breathe? Recently the Euro Union replied to this question by providing 12 billion Euro for the purpose of developing some countries involved in the neighborhood program. The list of the countries “covered” by Brussels includes as well as the GUAM countries (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova) and Armenia. Besides money the Euro commission has promised trade and economic integration for these countries, easy trade, simple vise regime, inclusion in joint programs and as well as close cooperation in the field of energy and transport. This is what the CIS decided to do 15 years ago, but could not do” writes the paper. The reporter thinks that “in difference of Moscow, which now provides financial support for the conflicting zones in CIS and in fact keeps the unrecognized states, Brussels has targeted the legal centers and in fact provides financial support to Georgia, Moldova and now is trying to re-attract Armenia to the West”.
