According to The Independent, the Indian government has passed a law, according to which men may be arrested for abusing or causing moral damage to their wives.
Before, the law about violence didn’t refer to violence in the family, in other words, violence in the home between man and wife was considered normal. By breaking the new law, the violators will get 1 year in prison and a 20,000 Indian rupi fine. Besides that, the victim-the wife-has the right to own 50% of the man’s property. Due to the lack of this law, many Indian men have kicked their wives out of the house in the past. According to the information of the UN, most Indian women are not hurt on the street, but rather at home. Based on statistics, 2/3 of Indian women aged 15-40 have been beaten or abused by their husbands. Indian men often beat their wives for not having brought enough things for the home after marriage. Sometimes, abuse has led to murder. There have been 6787 similar cases in 2005. Most Indian women have been killed in the kitchen because their husbands leave the gas extinguisher open on purpose and just when the women are getting ready to cook the meal, the gas extinguisher blows up. Many Indian men manage to consider the crime as accidental.
