Turkish nationalist intellectuals are certain that the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to well-known Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk is the Western world’s compensation for recognizing the Armenian Genocide. Nearly 80 Turk nationalist and left-wing intellectuals have announced that the Nobel Peace Prize is not the prize awared for Turkish literature, but rather the “compensation for Orhan Pamuk”. The authors of this announcement claim that “since the people giving the prize don’t have the opportunity to read the books on the Armenian Genocide in different languages, the literary Nobel Peace Prize has turned from an award acknowledging the values of literature into the imperialists’ tool for making a fool out of the public.” It is worth mentioning that the Turkish government has congratulated O. Pamuk for his award.
