Deduction method

17/10/2006 Armen BAGHDASARYAN

This week there were two extraordinary events in Armenia. First, former mayor of Yerevan and former head of the RA police general Suren Abrahamyan was attacked; second, NA deputy Hakob Hakobyan was arrested and accused of an armed attack. These two facts don’t seem to be connected with each other; however, there is a coincidence: in both cases the target is the Armenian Republican Party (directly or indirectly).

Let’s start from the incident connected with Suren Abrahamyan. What is the goal of that crime? It is very primitive to say that their goal was to frighten the general. If they wanted to frighten the general, they could have attacked him in other conditions, in the dark and would be more active. They wouldn’t tell him to “go and ask for forgiveness”. It is clear that the general will never do that. In other words, it is clear that the purpose of the crime was aimed towards the prime minister and, more importantly, towards undermining the relationship between the Republican party and “Republic” party (those relations were still normal due to some personalities). Why did they do that now? It is said that if the “old team” of the Republican party stays out of the game, it may join the “Republic” and become part of the opposition (the press has covered such information too). In other words, some parties followed up on the political developments, and as soon as there was a conflict between the prime minister and Suren Abrahamyan they decided to act and undermine their relations.

Now let’s discuss the arrest of Hakob Hakobyan. Many people knew that this person had many problems with the law. Besides that, they also knew about the gas stations and other businesses that belonged to him and that he didn’t pay taxes. However, our society usually does not pay any attention to such small things. The conflict was not a new event in our society too since there have been many such cases in the past too (there were no victims). Why was Hakob Hakobyan arrested? Even more, why did the governmental papers cover his illegal activities the day before the arrest? Is it a coincidence? Maybe.

Please note that three months ago Hakob Hakobyan joined the “Republican” party. He had problems with the law before that too, however, no one paid any attention to what he was doing. In order to find the answer to the mentioned question let’s try to understand why the “Republican” party gave membership to “people that had nicknames and could not speak literally well” on July 22. Why did they have to join that party officially? They could support that party indirectly and not join it. In fact, it was possible and nothing would change in that case. The only thing that would change is the fact that in the future it would be impossible to connect the “armed attack” with that party. In other words, some people were interested in it. Now the RP is faced with a big problem: if the parliament does not give permission to arrest the deputy, people will criticize the RP in backing criminals, and if it permits to arrest the MP, people will say that the RP handed over its member to the police and didn’t support him in difficult situations.

Please note that the mentioned choice (to give or not to give) mainly concerns the “old team” of the RP. It means that the arrest of Hakob Hakobyan will have an influence on the “old team” mainly. In addition, there is still a lot of time before elections and the RP does not feel the lack of “members that have nicknames and cannot speak literally well”.

Now let’s try to draw conclusions. In fact, both of the mentioned incidents have a political ground; accordingly the organizers are politicians. The opposition is excluded. The opposition would never attack Suren Abrahamyan and didn’t have the power to arrest Hakob Hakobyan. So, we can move on to the authorities now. The RP would not do that since first of all those actions would be aimed against their party. So, who remained? It is worth drawing on the method of deduction. The organizers are people who: 1. are able to arrest a governmental deputy without any fear, 2. can assure that they will not let the police find the people who attacked the general in the daytime, 3. are interested in undermining the reputation of the “Armenian Republican Party”.

In other words, “It is elementary, my dear Watson”.
