03/10/2006

After the UN 61 General Assembly and a meeting with the OSCE co-chairmen, the Armenian foreign affairs minister, Vardan Oskanyan, gave an interview to “Azatutyun” radio station, where he said that during the meeting in Paris they spoke about organizing a meeting of the foreign affairs ministers in New York, however, after the recommendation proposed by the GUAM to discuss the issue in the UN Armenia initiated to cancel the mentioned meeting. “We need to clarify the situation and figure out with the co-chairmen what kind of developments there may be. We did that during this meeting”, said Vardan Oskanyan and added that he was satisfied with the explanations. The Armenian foreign affairs minister says that his meeting with the co-chairmen was effective. For your information, Vardan Oskanyan said in his speech in the UN that Armenia agrees with the existing principles on the table of negotiations. “Azerbaijan is trying to show indirectly that they don’t accept the principles that we have agreed so far. This is the main problem. This shows that they are trying to fail the Minsk process”, said Vardan Oskanyan to “Azatutyun” radio station. The latter says that the problem consists in the fact that Azerbaijan is trying to fail the process in the name of Armenia. The minister did not say any details concerning any possible meetings with the co-chairmen and the Azeri foreign affairs minister. However, “Trend” writes that the head of the Azeri foreign affairs press department, Tahir Taghizadze has said that the OSCE co-chairmen are going to visit the region of the conflict in the nearest future. He also said that the Azeri foreign affairs minister, Elmar Mamediarov has met with the OSCE co-chairmen and Anjey Kasprchik, representative of the existing OSCE president, in New York and discussed issues concerning the conflict settlement. Taghizadze said that the mentioned meeting lasted two hours and was effective. In this week the OSCE co-chairmen are going to visit Helsinki as well. Finland currently heads OSCE and the co-chairmen are going to discuss the process of the conflict settlement in Helsinki as well.
