During an interview with “Trend”, President of the European Council Rene van der Linden touched upon the referendum to take place in Near Dnestr on September 17 and said that the “European Council won’t recognize that”. In response to the question as to what the European Council thinks about unrecognized states (Northern Osetia, Abkhazia, Near Dnestr and Karabakh) doing similar things and whether or not this is a danger for Europe, van der Linden said:
“The European Council won’t recognize the referendum of Near Dnestr and we won’t follow up on that. The Near Dnestr conflict is one of the “cold” conflicts of the region and that region interests Russia, as well as international organizations, including the European Council. We must work together to reach a final solution, but in any case, the European Council doesn’t approve of the Near Dnestr referendum as a means to declare independence,” said van der Linden.
It’s worth mentioning that according to “ITAR-TASS”, the president of the unrecognized state of Northern Osetia Edward Kokoyti has agreed to conduct an independence referendum.
