Sevan Might Turn Into A Swamp

The level of Sevan Lake in 2002 was measured to be 1897.04 meters.
According to the Ministry of Ecological Issues, the level of the lake
has risen by 93 centimeters during the past two years. «Even if the
project towards raising the level of Sevan by 6 meters is implemented
by the Ministry of Ecology, again, we will be very far from the former
image of Sevan. Let’s not forget that the level of Sevan has reduced by
20 meters since 1916 and 6 meters is enough for the lake’s water to
clean itself,» says president of the ”Stable Development” NGO Karine
Danielyan. «On the other hand, raising the level of the water is
self-sufficient, if of course there is no preparatory work being done,»
says K. Danielyan, «before raising the level of the water, some
preparatory work must be done, like deforestation clean the trash and
move the buildings to another location, make artificial coasts so that
it will be possible to keep Sevan from becoming a swamp.» The Ministry
of Ecology is also taking all of this into consideration. «We are
worrying about that, but at the present there are no projects planned
out. There must be long research done in order to find new lands. That
will be done in 2005”.
