According to our sources at the Yerevan Central Community Patrol Officer Service (POS), there is a lot of robbery on the major streets of Yerevan, even on the streets where there are many pedestrians. There are more than 20 cases of robbery in one day.
According to the same source, the gangs are young, built men between the ages of 20 and 25, who rob and run quickly from the scene of the crime. They organize the crime in pairs. The robbers mainly look for people with cell-phones, gold chains and hand purses.
On June 2 at around 4:30 p.m. two young hooligans ripped a gold necklace worth 500 dollars off of citizen N. Sargsyan on Grigor Lusavorich street and quickly ran off after physically hurting him.
“I was surprised and didn’t get to see their faces. I didn’t call the police because I wasn’t sure if I could get my precious necklace back. I think that they are doing this by the consent of the police officers,” says Sargsyan.
The only thing that Sargsyan could see was two young men moving towards him from the former funeral bureau building located 100-150 steps away from the municipality building. Sargsyan was also with his two children and he takes that road each day as he drops his children off at the kindergarten.
“That building has turned into the “elite” public restroom of our “elite” city, where you can hear about many robbery cases at night, while anarchists walk around at daytime. The disgusting smell of the ruins of that building has already made its way to the offices of the functionaries working at the municipality. Don’t they take a look from their glass windows to see what’s going on around them?” says Sargsyan in a depressed tone.
Two days before being robbed, Sargsyan witnessed how two young men stole a 14-year old boy’s mobile phone and fled from the scene of the crime located near the kindergarten.
