“It Is Impossible”

25/07/2005

Member of the Union of Land Defenders Armen Sargsyan, who is currently
in prison, has actively participated in the discussion led about the
Armenian authorities handing over the seized lands of Jebrayil, Fizuli
and Zangelan to Azerbaijan. Armen Sargsyan said the following in regard
to this: “I am in jail and I do not receive that much information.
Television networks obviously don’t talk about that. But I don’t think
that any authority figure, land defender or any political party will
agree to return the lands to Azerbaijan. There is probably some rumor
going around about that. It is impossible. Those lands can only be
returned by war. The Azeri can take back what has been seized only by
paying the price of death. The blood shed by our compatriots can be
found on each particle of dirt. So, nobody is in favor of turning those
lands in to those Turks, the Azeri.” In response to our question of
whether or not it was possible to solve the Karabagh peace settlement
without any compromises, Armen Sargsyan said: “Of course there have to
be compromises made, but as to how many, I can not say because I don’t
have much information regarding that.” We also asked Armen Sargsyan if
he had had conversations with Vazgen Sargsyan about turning in
Meghri-something which had been in the center of attention of many
Armenian political figures. “While forming the state budget, Vazgen
Sargsyan stayed at my villa for 3-4 days. He used to play soccer with
my son Karlen sometimes. At the time, there were small talks regarding
Meghri, but I do not wish to say what he told me. I can only say that
Vazgen was definitely not in favor of turning in Meghri. For him,
Meghri was something else. He would give up everything else besides
that. Vazgen compared turning in Meghri to losing Yerevan,” said Armen
Sargsyan.
