Yesterday the US Department of State published a report dedicated to their works to “develop democracy and protect human rights”, which contains a separate chapter writing about the situation in Armenia. Based on the report, although there are positive developments in human rights protection in Armenia, the situation is still bad. “The large responsibilities of Robert Kocharyan are out of the control of Armenian parliament, as for corruption, the vulnerable judicial system is under political pressure. In parallel to all this the opposition of the country is weak and almost collapsed”, states the report. The Department of State once again reminded about the parliamentary and presidential elections conducted in fraud and violations and added that the same thing happened during the referendum of 2005. It writes also about widespread corruption in the police system and pressure on prisoners. Besides that the report also writes that the independence of Mass Media is limited in Armenia.
