Europe is worried

02/04/2006

The EU is trying to define its role in its neighboring territories, where there is neither war nor peace. This was what head of the European program of the International Crisis Group, Nicholas White said. According to him, if the EU doesn’t realize its neighborhood security vision, its reputation may fall down compared to the reputation of the US and Russia. According to him if the situation gets worse in Southern Caucasus, Europe “will not be able to find an answer to the wars between its neighbors”.

Europe is interested in keeping peace in the Southern Caucasus because it wants to get oil and gas from the Caspian region and, at the same time, improve the transportation and connection between Europe and Asia.

The new report by the Crisis Group contains information about the efforts of Europe in the region to develop peace. The newly appointed representative is going to monitor the negotiations of the Karabakh, South Osia and Abkhazian conflicts. Even more, the EU is sure that it plays a bigger role in these issues than the UN and OSCE. But anyway the EU says that in the nearest future they will not make suggestions to Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan to join them.
