The co-chairmen of the US Congress group Joe Nolenberg and Frank Pallone, occupied with the solution of Armenian issues, have expressed their concern about the destruction of Armenian Khachkars (cross-stones) and inscriptions that took place in Nakhijevan on December 15. “Similar actions took place in 2002 as well. It was when only 2000 out of 10000 khachkars were saved”, this is said in the letter sent to the Ambassador of Azerbaijan to the US Hafis Pasheyev. The letter also implies the number of responsibilities that Azerbaijan was supposed to take on in the framework of the UN, OSCE, Council of Europe, etc. “As a member of the international community Baku has to protect the cultural and historical heritage. By ignoring these warranties the Azeri government tramples the efforts of the US and European governments aimed to providing stability in the South Caucasus”, mentioned the congressmen. The co-chairmen petitioned Azerbaijan to cease the cases of vandalism, taking place in the ancient Armenian cemetery of Jugha and prepared a report about the caused damage to later fix the situation.
