Important events in 2005

1.    Failure of the European constitution. The French gave way to many discussions regarding the plan for “going against” the constitution during the public referendum.
2.    The terrorist act in London. The people of London were saddened by this because based on the terrorist act; a decision was made not to start the Olympics of 2012 there. Four bombs which were set in the metro and a bus killed 50 people and injured 700 people at almost the same time.
3.    The death of Pope John Paul II put an end to the period of the Catholic Church in the modern day history of Rome.
4.    The racist attacks in Europe and Australia proved that there is discrimination in developed countries too.
5.    Taking out Israeli military forces and residencies in the Gaza section and the Western coast of Jordan split the people in two and led up to the removal of prime minister of the leading party Ariel Sharon, who, in fact, was the one that had founded the residencies at the time.
6.    The “Katrina” hurricane in the U.S. showed that the world’s most powerful country is not able to help its citizens evacuate and prevent pillage. The U.S. was forced to ask for help from foreign countries. As a result, New Orleans, the home for jazz, went under water.
7.    For the first time since 1975, political figures in Lebanon talked about the danger of a new civil war, after the assassination of former Prime Minister of Lebanon and removal of Syrian military forces of Lebanon.
8.    South America took a “turn” in 2005. A new alliance was formed based on the anti-American views. The alliance included Venezuela, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Bolivia. Extremist political figure Evo Morales won the Bolivian presidential elections. The U.S. plans for creating a free trade zone in this region failed.
9.    Former president of Iraq Saddam Hussein’s trial began. Everyone was interested in knowing whether or not the trial would stabilize the situation or lead up to a new wave of attacks.
10.    Iranian president Mahmud Ahmadinejad’s anti-Semite announcements made people all over the world worry and made Tehran work harder to create obstacles for handing in the Iranian “nuclear weapon” statement to the UN’s Security Council.
