Yesterday the RA Minister of Foreign Affairs Vardan Oskanyan sent a letter to the general director of UNESCO Koitsura Maatsura in regard to the latter’s attention to the destruction of Armenian grave inscriptions and Khachkars (cross-stones) of Nor Jugha (Nakhijevan). The minister has informed Maatsura that at the present the military forces of Azerbaijan, armed with huge hammers and heavy devices, are destroying the historical monuments of the Armenian medieval cemeteries, inscriptions and Khachkars. “This territory, located in between Iran and Armenia, had been populated by Armenians for many generations. There were over 10,000 hand made monuments and Khachkars in the mentioned cemetery”, mentioned Oskanyan in his letter. The latter has also expressed hope that the mediation and condemnation of the international community would make the Azeri cease the destruction of historical memory of Armenians and asked the general director of UNESCO to use his position to prevent the destruction of the cultural heritage.
