The man hunt continues

06/12/2005

A man hunt began on the streets of Yerevan yesterday-especially near the Opera house. The police officers have started another round of terrorist acts against the participants of the opposition meeting. When people were going home after the meeting at the Matenadaran, nearly ten people dressed in civilian clothes were beating many in the crowd. One of them called for help to the police and red cap officers standing on the other side of the street. The civilian clothed men had persecuted the participants of the meeting until the “Republic” political party’s office and “forced” them to get into the cars. As stated by “Republic” political party, member of the Maralik branch of the political party Karen Saghatelyan was forced to get into a car by some of the men wearing the civilian clothes and taken to an unknown place at around 6:30 p.m. They had also stuffed others and taken them to unknown sites, including members of the “Republic” political party Levon Petrosyan and Misha Sukiasyan from Maralik. They took leader of the Malatia-Sebastia branch of the National Democratic Union Margarita Manukyan and her husband Vrej Yeranosyan to the Central police department in Yerevan. From here, the men in civilian clothes called the police department and informed them that they had made tens of arrests. According to witnesses, “they had started to hunt for people long before the meeting” and the vans were full of arrested individuals. The police had also taken member of the “Republic” political party Artak Hakobyan and released him after a short while.
