Modern writers are no more pneumonic and untimely dead

Lilit AVAGYAN | March 29, 2011

But it is anticipated that it will happen in the school textbooks. The school curriculum of literature is made in such a way that the knowledge of the students starts from Mashtos and ends with Hrant Matevosyan. So it is impossible to receive any information about the modern literature. Perhaps the reason is that, according to the developers of literature curriculums, the modern writers don’t have any valuable pieces. So it would be a total waste of time for the students to become acquainted with those writers and their pieces. But the doctor of literature, expert of literature Ani Pashayan and the candidate for literature Arkmenik Nikoghosyan have a different opinion. A.P. –Armenian language and literature subjects should be most expected ones. Literature is among the first with its context and existence. Here the teacher has to play a priority role. We should understand who the teacher is and how he/she teaches. It is impossible to connect teaching of literature with only the textbooks. First of... [full story]

Open letter to the members of the Public Council from DILIJAN International School Project initiators

July 17, 2010

15th July 2010 Dear members of the Public Council, In light of the public debate surrounding the introduction of amendments to the “Language Law” and educational system, we – the initiators of the DILIJAN International School project, as well as the members of the Board of Trustees, have heard from community representatives with words of both support and rebuke regarding the project to create the DILIJAN International School. We place a high value on civil society, and respect its opinion, so we write to you as to the voice of public opinion.      The issue pertaining to changing the “Language Law” is very important and affects the interests of all the republic’s citizens, although, in our opinion, discussing this law can provide an impetus to a deeper discussion about Armenia’s future and its place in the world. Armenia and the Armenian nation in general have several questions to answer in order to determine the model of its future development....

Craig Barrett’s visit to encourage IT development

Marine MARTIROSYAN | July 10, 2010

During the past years we have been suspicious to any award ceremonies and we don’t believe in such things anymore. People had the same reaction to the award ceremony of the IT sector in Armenia. “What science or information technologies can develop in our country if the scientists are receiving 45.000 drams a month and paper letters are working faster than the internet in the country?” say people who don’t believe in the development of the IT sector in Armenia. They didn’t even try to understand and appreciate the fact that it was a great occasion that the former executive director, the head of the board of director of Intel company Roger Keith Barrett visited Armenia, during which he received the president’s prize for contribution to the development of IT in the world. Craig Barrett is a pioneer advocate for education development. Recently he was recognized by the US president as one of the leaders of the private sector as an initiator of national education, science, technologies,...

Our language – flexible but vulnerable

Babken TUNYAN | June 17, 2010

The reaction over the opening of foreign language schools gained quite of a noise – protest actions, articles, press conferences, even a special internet webpage “Against the Change of the Law on Language.” It is indeed very good that the society is able to raise and support its concern over this process. It is no less good that the social-economic and geopolitical issues are diminished for the sake of opposing the law on language. But in the meantime the reaction and echo over this process is surprising and unclear. Why? Perhaps it would be easier to say when it wouldn’t be surprising. It wouldn’t be surprising if the protest were organized to demonstrate concern over the fact that in the National Assembly the notch of the Armenian language is gradually decreasing from convocation to convocation. Logically, a nation, which is so concerned about its mother language, shouldn’t have elected MPs, who are not able to speak Armenian in a literal way. Or when the votes are rigged...

I am you and I am not there

Lilit AVAGYAN | May 20, 2010

By protecting the changes to the law on languages the minister of education of Armenia Armen Ashotyan is evidently sure that the danger of public complaint is not as serious as it seems. The Ombudsman of Armenia Armen Harutyunyan has also brought up arguments against the necessity of teaching mother language in the schools. He claimed that it's time that we look at us from the side and claimed that the teaching in the foreign language in schools is an additional opportunity to change the Armenian nation. This means that the bill will be advocated at any cost. But the question is “why should the Armenian nation be changed now and why wouldn't we look at us with the eyes of the English or Russian speakers?” The answer is simple. Although the society hasn't brought up a direct demand to make the main language Russian or any other but the majority that is the society is not going to majorly struggle against this bill. Today more than ever they have grounds to realize their “conspiracy” plans...

From school to politics

The Konrad-Adenauer  is  the German Christian Democratic foundation, which during the past years spread its activities in the South Caucasus as well. Although it is connected with the Christian-Democratic party it doesn’t depend on the party. And as the head of the South Caucasus office of the Konrad-Adenauer foundation Katja Christina Plate says it is not a party but a political foundation, the purpose of which is to support the expansion of democratic values. - The Konrad-Adenauer foundation started its activity in the region in January 2008. We have offices in Yerevan, Tbilisi and Baku. In South Caucasus we work in 4 main sectors. The first one is cooperation with the counterpart political party. He is not worse

July 3, 2010

“After graduating from the International Quality School my grandchildren will continue their studies in abroad, thus it is Ashotyan’s problem whether he recognizes the diploma of that school or no. The certificate of this school is recognized everywhere in the world,” said the president of Grand Holding Hrant Vardanyan in answer to our question concerning education minister Armen Ashotyan’s announcement that the International Quality School operates illegally. Hrant Vardanyan’s 3 grandchildren are studying at this school. The businessman does not even care if the studies at this school are exclusively in English,” said Hrant Vardanyan....

Exam results reviewed

June 14, 2007

High school graduates who took the graduate and centralized Armenian language examinations on June 1 were surprised to see changes in their grades on Monday. In most cases, the grades were raised by one point, without any appeals. Citing the Ministry of Education and Science, according to “A1plus”, the changes were made by the decision of the appeal committee after the discussions of the group of experts adjunct to the committee. Many experts from the Academy of Fine Arts and Yerevan State University and teachers of different schools have analyzed not only the appealed tests, but also the other tasks. The appeal committee has reviewed the grading of the 19th and 22nd tasks of the test. These tasks were what caused the disagreements and appeals of the high school graduates and parents. According to the appeal committee, despite the a19 task having corresponded to the requirement, all four choices of the wrongly formulated answers were graded in favor of the student. Based on that, the grade of each...

Warning for putting people under stress

September 5, 2006

Presses have already touched upon the humiliating “trickery” of universities after August 24, when applicants had read their names on the lists and then had come to see that their names were excluded. This led to the protests of the students. The state admission committee has already discussed this issue. Based on the press release of the Ministry of Education and Sciences, the state admission committee has given a warning to head of the accumulation center Ruben Topchyan for making errors in the computer-based program. Nearly 30 of the students who had their names taken out of the lists have been offered to take distance studying with their chosen professions. Based on different sources, the number of these students is 100, while the state admission committee mentions 30. As for the students whose chosen departments don’t offer distance studying have been forced to change their departments. ...
